Regional Low Vision Resource Center

Providing comprehensive Low Vision services, evaluations, support and family resources to children, youth, and adults in the Four State Region

What is Low Vision?

A person with low vision has some useful vision, but has difficulty with normal daily living task such as reading, writing, and managing work or household activities. This type of vision can occurs due to birth defects, eye diseases, accidents, or aging. Low Vision can occur in people of all ages.

At the Regional Low Vision Center we look at the individuals abilities and work toward maximizing these abilities.

Services Provided :

Low Vision Examinations with Optical Aids:
At the Low Vision Center, we have over 400 items to promote visual abilities toward independence in daily living, work or community activities. These evaluations are performed by eye doctors and trained clinical staff.

Technology Evaluations
The use of the latest technology to assist low vision patients. This would include Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTV) and adaptive computer systems.

Independent Living Skills.
Evaluation of non-optical aids to assist a patient's ability to function and travel independently within their living environment.

Other services provided:
• Training and assistance with low vision devises by trained clinical staff.
• Resource information regarding low vision and eye disorders.
• Resources for locating low vision aids, assistive devices and agencies serving low vision patients.
• Support group meetings.
• Recreational activities.

What is a Low Vision Examination?

A low vision examination includes a detailed clinical analysis including a functional assessment of the patient visual abilities. This examination involves measuring the visual impairment and evaluating the ocular disease to prescribe rehabilitative devices to improve visual performance. Psycho-physical abilities, educational, environmental influences, daily living goals, and interest of the individual are evaluated to bring about positive behavior and maximize usage of optical and non-optical devices to enhance the quality of life for the patient.
